Every parent needs a break once and a while. Hiring a responsible and reliable babysitter begins with preparation. Finding and keeping a great babysitter can be a challenge. Word of mouth may be your best resource: ask friends, neighbors, and family for a good referral. You can do your part to prepare your sitter by leaving clear instructions and information before leaving home.
Think SAFE:
S for Sleep
Be sure to let the babysitter know your expectations about bedtimes.
Would the child or children need a nightlight, a special blanket, or help with brushing their teeth or other personal care? Sharing details about the bedtime routine can greatly help a babysitter get your children ready for and in bed.
A for Activity
Write down activities that the children are allowed and that they enjoy. For example, are the children allowed to go outside? Be clear on any restrictions or limitations such as access and use of the TV, computer, and/or video games.
F for Food
Many children may have food sensitivities or allergies. Be sure to discuss and share what food the children are allowed to eat and when and include what is available for the babysitter as well. Be specific about any food allergies or off-limits foods.
E for Elimination
Discuss with the sitter where each child is in terms of being potty trained. If diapers are being used, review where all supplies are with the babysitter. Be specific as to what type of help each child may need regarding using the bathroom.
Additional items to discuss before heading out:
Always leave contact information, give a house tour with house rules (clearly identifying off-limit rooms, phone and computer use, and pet information), and don’t forget to talk about the babysitter’s fee.
As you plan for adult time or time-alone, think SAFE as you prepare for a babysitter to care for your child or children.
