We’re on the Same Team: Growing Together as a Family

same team

By Ellen Waddill, with insights from Aimee Phleger, Group/LEA Transition Coordinator

Life with babies and toddlers can feel like a constant negotiation. With the daily demands of parenting, it’s natural to find ourselves rushing to fix problems, offering lots of praise, or trying to protect children from every disappointment. But one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is learning to honor every member of the family, including ourselves.

Being on the same team means recognizing that everyone’s needs matter. Parents need time, rest, and support. Children need guidance, connection, and opportunities to grow. When we approach family life as teammates, everyday challenges become opportunities to learn respect and cooperation. As Aimee Phleger, Group/LEA Transition Coordinator, explains, “Children thrive when they feel they belong.”

Try shifting the focus from praise alone: (“You’re the best!”) to noticing effort and contribution (“You carried your cup to the sink. That was helpful.”). Aimee explains that validating a child’s feelings while trusting their abilities fosters emotional regulation and problem-solving skills in young children. Rather than rushing to fix every frustration, stay calm and confident: “I know you’re disappointed. You can do this.” Children build resilience when they are trusted to work through challenges

From the earliest years, children learn what it means to be part of a family. They discover that shared resources, responsibilities, and routines matter because everyone’s well-being is connected. Aimee Phleger further explains that calm and respectful interactions among parents and family members teach children how to build healthy relationships throughout their lives.

When children understand that they are valued members of a team, they begin to develop empathy, responsibility, and confidence. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a home where everyone is respected and valued.

After all, we’re on the same team—and that’s what gives every family its Home Team Advantage.
