From the NICU to Meeting Developmental Milestones – Mason’s Story

Mason Perez

“Early Intervention has been an incredible blessing for our family.” -Stacey, Mason’s mom, Lawrence

Mason and his parents live in a laughter-filled home in Lawrence, Massachusetts. They contacted Partners in Child Development’s Early Intervention program for therapeutic services after Mason was discharged from the hospital when he was an infant.

Mason experienced a lack of oxygen at birth and began his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Stacey, a teacher, knew the value of Early Intervention Services and reached out to Partners in Child Development to arrange EI services for Mason to assist in his development.

Meg McCarty, an occupational therapy assistant (OTA), worked with Mason and his family. “I’m so thankful. I leaned into it (the EI services) and Meg provided insights I hadn’t been exposed to; she challenged Mason in ways I didn’t even realize were possible,” shared Stacey, “I found myself looking forward to our meetings—not just for Mason’s growth, but for my own. It was wonderful to have another mom and expert to talk to, learn from, and feel supported by.”

Stacey went on to say, “Though the sessions were designed for Mason, they became just as beneficial for us as parents. His dad and I learned how to engage him in purposeful play, and it has been amazing to see him thrive.”

Mason has been meeting developmental milestones, and his parents have been thrilled with his progress. Early Intervention Services has made an impact for this family.

Stacey summarized her family’s experience with Partners in Child Development’s Early Intervention program, “As a first-time mom navigating life with a baby straight out of the NICU, I had so many questions about Mason’s development and how to best support him. Ten months later, Mason is hitting all of his milestones, and we couldn’t be happier.”
