Building Confident Movers Through Play

Happy toddler playing

Lori Landry, a Physical Therapist at Partners in Child Development’s Early Intervention Services serving the Greater Lawrence area, reminds us that play is meant to be fun and enjoyable for both caregivers and children. Incorporating ways to have fun in play while working on motor skills may take a little imagination. Lori enjoys helping families discover creative ways to use what they already have at home to encourage movement and support development.

Try these fun activities at home:

  • Pillow Obstacle Course: Create a path of soft cushions for your toddler to climb over. This activity builds strength, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
  • DIY Balance Beam: Place a strip of masking tape on the floor and have your child walk heel-to-toe along the line. This helps build balance, focus, and body awareness. As they become more comfortable, try hopping, jumping, or walking backward.
  • Balloon Tap & Toss: Tap a balloon back and forth to build hand-eye coordination and motor planning skills.

As Lori explains, “Children learn best when having the freedom to explore movement in natural ways while having fun through play.”

Watching a toddler explore their world is an adventure and helps them grow into confident movers.
