Appreciating Our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) at Anderson School

Speech Language Pathologists at Anderson School

May 18th is Speech-Language Pathologist Appreciation Day, and at Anderson School we have so much to celebrate!

This appreciation day was established in 2010 to help raise awareness of the important role that this profession has in developing receptive and expressive language skills, as well as feeding skills, in educational and healthcare settings.

At Anderson School in Andover, MA, we are so fortunate to have two highly-skilled and beloved speech-language pathologists, Taylor and Vanessa, who work with our students every day. Both have earned master’s degrees in Speech-Language Pathology. Their role is especially meaningful as we support a unique student population – many of whom might otherwise be home-bound or lack access to specialized educational services.

Because many of our students are nonverbal communicators, our speech language pathologists incorporate a wide variety of communication systems to best support each student and to promote effective communication among their peers.

Our SLPs build each student’s receptive and expressive communication skills using a variety of systems and approaches. Unsupported communication includes vocalizing, eye gazing, facial expressions, and speech. Low-tech supports are also incorporated into a student’s day using high contrast pictures, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), and switch devices. Both our SLPs are highly trained in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) implementation and programming. This includes high tech tools such as iPads, dedicated devices, and eye gaze systems incorporated into the classroom setting and individual student speech therapies.

Our SLPs work to build and expand receptive and expressive communication skills for each individual student based on their IEP as well as among our students to promote successful peer interactions.

Collaborative group sessions are part of the Anderson School curriculum across all classrooms so through natural activities such as games, crafts, and play, students leverage various communication systems in functional, motivating ways.
